Basic H2S Training - 9014 (OPITO APPROVED)
Register NowCourse Overview
This aims to ensure that the learner gains the required basic knowledge and understanding of the hazards and properties of H2S, and appropriate emergency response actions to take should an H₂S-related incident arise.
The objectives of the training are that learners will be able to:
a. Understand and explain the properties and associated hazards of H₂S.
b. Understand and explain information relating to the function and use of relevant detection and respiratory protection equipment.
c. Understand and practice appropriate emergency response actions, including the use of detection and escape equipment.
Learning Outcomes 1: H2S Hazards, Emergency Response Actions, and Apparatus.
The learner will understand:
1.1 H₂S gas: how it's formed, its common names, and where it is ordinarily found
1.2 The physical properties and characteristics of H₂S
1.3 Common definitions such as parts per million (ppm) and occupational/workplace exposure limits (OEL/WEL)
1.4 Measurement and the OEL/WEL of H₂S
1.5 The physiological effects of exposure to H₂S and factors affecting individual susceptibility
1.6 How H₂S is detected and the use of onsite & personal detection equipment
1.7 Actions to be taken in the event of an alarm
1.8 The types of respiratory equipment available, including escape breathing apparatus (EBA) & self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and the importance of correct fit of the face mask
1.9 The role of response teams in an H2S emergency and their use of SCBA
Learning Outcomes 2: Safe use of essential PPE when dealing with H₂S hazards and Emergencies
The learner will perform:
2.1 Operation of H₂S personal detection equipment—pre-use checks & operation.
2.2 Responding to an alarm
2.3 Donning & operating (including checks) an escape breathing apparatus (EBA) with a mask within 30 seconds* To be conducted in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines for specific mask types.
2.4 Donning & operating (including checks) an EBA with a hood within 30 seconds.
2.5 Connecting to a pressurized cascade breathing system with an activated EBA, which has been donned correctly
2.6 Disconnecting from a pressurized cascade breathing system with an activated EBA that has been donned correctly.
Course skill sets:
Skill sets are based on basic training in the following subjects, knowledge and understanding of the particular hazards and properties of H₂S, and appropriate emergency response actions to take should an H₂S-related incident arise.
Course standards and outcomes:
The training course standards are paralleled with a variety of the OPITO standards.
On completion of training, all students will be expected to show competence by demonstrating all the above skill sets in a realistic simulation.
Students failing any risk-critical outcome of the syllabus may be removed from the training course and be required to undergo a period of further training before re-attending.
| Course Duration | Delivery Language | Assessment | Re-Certification Interval | Target Audience |
| 4 HRS | English or Hindi | Written (Multiple Choice Questionnaire) and Practical Assessment | 2 Years | All personnel that are, or could be, working in an environment that could become contaminated by H₂S gas. |
