Overview

Paediatric first aid is the immediate and appropriate care provided to infants and children during an emergency, injury, or illness. It aims to stabilise the child, reduce risk, and support them until professional medical help arrives.

This qualification develops the knowledge and practical skills required to provide effective emergency paediatric first aid and use an AED safely.

Target Audience

Parents, caregivers, teachers, childcare personnel, and anyone likely to provide effective emergency paediatric first aid.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be able to communicate in English and read and understand equipment labels.

The course covers emergency first aid for infants and children, including the safe use of an AED:

Role, Assessment and Basic Life Support

Role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider

Minimising infection risks

Differences between an infant and a child for first-aid treatment

Scene survey and primary survey

Summoning appropriate assistance

CPR using infant and child manikins

Recovery position and continual breathing checks

Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)

Paediatric Emergencies and Minor Injuries

Seizures

Choking

Life-threatening external bleeding

Shock

Bites and stings

Small cuts, grazes, bumps, bruises, splinters, and nosebleeds
