Overview

IOSH Working Safely is an introductory safety-and-health course designed for people at any level and in any sector. It uses practical, step-by-step guidance to communicate essential workplace safety messages.

The course develops personal responsibility, hazard and risk awareness, practical control measures, environmental awareness, and participation in workplace safety processes.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, participants should be able to:

Identify workplace hazards and risks
Explain how accidents occur and how hazards can be controlled
Outline the legal rights and responsibilities of employers and employees
Identify and control common hazards such as fire, electricity, chemicals, and work equipment

The IOSH Working Safely syllabus is delivered through four modules:

Module 1: Introducing Working Safely

Human consequences behind workplace incident statistics
Importance of personal responsibility for safety and health

Module 2: Defining Hazard and Risk

Hazard and risk explained in everyday language
Familiar examples of how work can go wrong
Risks associated with simple or repetitive tasks

Module 3: Identifying Common Hazards

Aggression, violence, asbestos, bullying, chemicals, and harmful substances
Computer workstations, confined spaces, drugs and alcohol, electricity, and fire
Access and egress, work at height, housekeeping, lighting, and manual handling
Noise, personal hygiene, plant and machinery, slips, trips, stress, and temperature
Vehicles, transport, and welfare facilities

Module 4: Improving Safety Performance

Safety-and-health systems and processes explained in clear language
Bridging the gap between management and the workforce
Encouraging employee participation in safety processes
