Course Information

Blockchain is an emerging technology, with almost daily announcements on its applicability to everyday life. It is perceived to provide significant opportunities to disrupt traditional products and services due to the distributed, decentralised, highly secure and immutable nature of blockchains, features such as the permanence of the blockchain record and the ability to run smart contracts. This course aims to provide conceptual understanding of the function of blockchains as a method of securing distributed ledgers, a new peer to peer transactional communication approach, how consensus on their contents is achieved and the new applications that they enable. It covers the technological underpinnings of blockchain operations as distributed data structures and decision making systems, their functionality and different architecture types. It also provides an evaluation of existing smart contract capabilities and examines blockchain future directions, opportunities, risks and challenges.

Decentralized blockchain-based systems, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Hyperledger and Corda are successful beyond all expectations. Even though the technology didn’t not reach its maturity level yet, but it promises to revolutionize how we think of financial, information, communication, eduction, supply chain, healthcare, digital identity and many other industries and businesses.

This course will prepare the students to be theoratically and practically ready once blockchain technology reaches its maturity within the upcoming two or three years maximum. They will learn how these systems are built, how to interact with them, how to design secure distributed applications and be able to demonstrate advanced blockchain knowledge and skills whithin their entities or globally as blockchain professionals so they can move from being within the normal audience and spectators to become major key members in this rolling digital transformation era.
