Course Information

Blockchain has numerous use cases outside the world of Bitcoin that are still little known and that have a potential to revolutionize business processes of many industries. The aim of this course is to investigate advanced blockchain applications, architecture and developing tools as well as security frameworks and to explain how to be applied in various sectors to introduce efficient blockchain solutions.

The course focuses on key components that make up a blockchain and explains how these components can be successfully used to drive innovation. From the fundamentals of blockchain architecture, its tools, developing new nodes, to the business and technical components. After that, we will consider the different types of blockchains from public to hybrid and syndicated. Smart contracts will be presented in details as well as different platforms while focusing on the Hyperledger fabric architecture. All these terms and functions will be analyzed and finally a discussion will be followed on how blockchain will impact different industries while highlighting different use cases.

This course aims to provide conceptual understanding of the function and architecture of blockchains as a method of securing distributed ledgers, how consensus on their contents is achieved, and the new applications that they enable. It covers the technological underpinnings of blockchain operations as distributed data structures and decision making systems, their functionality and different architecture types. It provides a critical evaluation of existing smart contract capabilities and platforms, and examines their future directions, opportunities, risks and challenges.

Course Objectives

The course objectives requires to:

  • Understand the blockchain architecture and all its related business and technical components
  • Evaluate the setting where a blockchain based structure may be applied, its potential and its limitations
  • Understand what constitutes a smart contract, what are its legal implications and what it can and cannot do, now and in the near future
  • Analyze to what extent smart and self-executing contracts can benefit automation, governance, transparency and the Internet of Things (IOT)
  • Attain awareness of the new challenges that exist in monetizing businesses around blockchains and smart contracts
  • Describe and understand the differences between the most prominent blockchain structures and permissioned blockchain service providers, as well as rising alliances and networks
